Team of Russian scientists and engineers created first Russian left ventricular assist device Sputnik (LVAD Sputnik). It was designed to replace left ventricular function in patients with severe heart failure and can be used in a cardiac surgical unit of any clinic or hospital as opposed to heart transplants performed only in specialized transplant centers. Besides, heart transplantation requires expensive immunosuppressive therapy and regular monitoring after the operation, while implantation is followed only by blood coagulation therapy. The device consists of implantable and external parts connected with an electric cable going through a percutaneous lead in the patient’s skin that is protected with a membrane. The implanted pump is connected to the heart with artificial tubes (cannulae): the pump inlet—to the left ventricle, and the pump outlet – to the aorta.
